Book Review: A Heart Once Broken

A Heart Once Broken is a Christian fiction book by author Jerry Eicher.  Jerry is the best selling author of numerous books and I am certain this one will be another best seller.  The Amish characters Lydia and Sandra Troyer and best friend Rosemary Beiler have grown up close friends.  As they are nearing the age of marriage the cousins seem to be interested in the same young man,  Ezra Wagler.  The cousins desire him to offer a buggy ride home after singing which shows an intent in getting to know one another for the purpose of marriage.  Eventually the girls make a deal as to who should have Ezra's affection, unfortunately the deal doesn't turn out as planned.  Tragedy occurs in the girls lives and changes many things in their lives and the community.

This novel is a fast read and attention grabber.  I always enjoy reading Amish stories and this is one is another I will add to my reading collection.  I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys clean fiction and especially to lovers of Amish fiction as myself.

Guest Review: The Family Under the Bridge

​The book “The Family Under The Bridge” by Natalie Savage Carlson is about this man named “Armond” who was a hobo living under the bridges in Paris. His belongings were pushed around in an old baby buggy. It was around Christmas time, it was in the winter time so it was cold. Armond found the Calcets and the three children under the bridge. Armond did not care for children at first but then at the end he did care for children.Armond found a job and became a business man. The book the “The Family Under The Bridge” did not grab my attention because it was not my interest.   It was a drama book and I don’t like drama books. Although I don't like drama books, I learned from the book that I should guide people into the right way. I also learned from the story that homeless families get encouraged by people guiding them to.    

This review was previously posted; however, I am reporting because this is a must read novel.  Enjoy!!!

Two Crosses by Elizabeth Musser is highly recommended

Two Crosses by Elizabeth Musser is the first in the Secrets of Trilogy Series.  This is an extremely long novel that I found difficult to read at the beginning.  My difficulty at the beginning is contributed to my lack of knowledge of the Algerian War.  Although the beginning had a great deal of detail and I found it a little confusing and slow reading. It began to pick up about 1/4 way through and as I read I became eager to find out what was happening next to the characters.

The novel is set in 1961 during the Algerian War where terrorist were killing both women and children.  The author refrained from graphic detail.  The Algerian's were striving to gain freedom from France.  Due to the terrorist attacks many families were fleeing to France for safety and to restart their lives.

The characters in this novel were well developed and appeared life like throughout the story.  In spite of the numerous characters I was able to follow each one and the way that it is written I began to care what happens to each character.  Two Crosses is a wonderful story about war and love.

This novel is a Christian historical fiction that is full of suspense, romance, and faith.  There are cultural conflicts, heartache, and social struggles all rolled up into one amazing novel. A must readbut beware, the ending is a cliff hanger; so, you'll want to read the next book in the series.

This novel is fantastic!!! As a quilter I enjoy reading stories that revolve around quilts and quilting. "A bed without a quilt is like a sky without stars," is a quote from Frankie Chasing Bear's wise grandmother. Frankie Chasing Bear is making a Lakota Star quilt for her son Harold during the 1950's. Frankie is faced with difficult times as she becomes apart of a government relocation program that is supposed to assist the Indians. 

 This novel the story and characters are well developed. It contains family, tradition, love, romance, and unfortunately hatred. The story keeps you wanting to read more. Although the book was fasted paced and easy to read, I was sadden by the way the Indians were treated by our government.

This is a heart warming story about an old man named Armand.  Armand is a hobo who lives in Paris, under a bridge. He begs and does odd jobs for money to take care of himself and buy food. One day he finds a mother and her three children in his "home", under the bridge. At first he is gruff and unhappy about sharing the bridge, but in time he begins to like and help care for this poor homeless family. As Christmas nears, the children ask for nothing except a home of their own and Armand comes up with a plan to make their wish come true. 

This is the first book that I've read by Natalie Savage Carlson.  She has written a beautiful, sensitive story full of humor, insight and wisdom. With fast paced, interesting scenes, young readers will be able to identify with the characters of the children in the story and begin to understand the meaning of family and the rewards of giving and accepting help from others. The Family Under the Bridge is a thoughtful, heartwarming story that has inspired our after school program to help homeless families.
